Welcome to the myfordboy channel.
My user name comes from my lathe which is a British made Myford, nothing to do with the Ford motor company.
My main interest is model engineering and there are videos showing some of the engines I have built and also videos showing how some parts were machined.
There is a series of videos showing how I cast my own metal parts mostly using easily found materials.
To encourage builders without workshop equipment to make something I have on offer FREE of charge, plans for some easy to make Stirling cycle engines. There are full construction videos of these engines here on my UA-cam channel. These are very popular and thousands of plans have been sent out.

Piston/Cylinder O Ring Fit for a Smooth Running Model Steam Engine.
Переглядів 3,9 тис.2 місяці тому
Free engine plans at myfordboy.blogspot.com I belive the secret for a smooth runner is a good piston to cylinder O ring fit. If the fit is too tight the engine may run perfectly well on compressed air but not on steam. Here I show my method. The piston is slightly undersize and does not touch the cylinder walls.

The Myfordboy Steam Roller Part 1. Double Acting Engine for a Mamod.
Переглядів 7 тис.5 місяців тому
I designed and built this engine to replace the single acting Mamod one on Traction engine and steam rollers. It puts the cylinder inboard in a more realist position. I don't have a Mamod engine but am now building my own version as the engine runs so well. Big thanks to Retro SteamTech channel for giving me some dimentions of a Mamod roller. Can I be cheeky and ask for the STL of the latch too, please. Have you thought about putting it on Thingiverse or Printables? I am sure many others would be interested in it. Many thanks.
Email me and i will send it. I have stuff on Thingiverse under my name Caster. I havn't put anything there for a while, a lot of trouble and people just critisize if they cannot print it .
@@myfordboy That's great, thanks. Good of you to share. It's ashame that you always hear from the critics but rarely from those whowho are successful. I'll send you my email address. Thanks again.
Very nice work. You’re castings is just on another level.
New subscribed from Somalia thanks my teacher
Thanks for the video. On my pencil torch, whenever it misbehaves, I've had good results blowing down the nozzle with a compressed air gun set at a lowish pressure (say 1 - 2 bar). Quick & easy.
Thanks for the tip. I use a lot of these for my steamboat power plants.
Would love to see it painted
Nice one. Thanks for that. 👍
I VERY CAREFULLY used an acetone (overnight) soak.
Hey, Like the channel but was wondering how to reference the compound toolpost on the cross-slide.There does not seem to be any indexing marks or zero point to reference off the index on the back of the toolpost :/ Cant find a video on that so maybe you can do one ?
There was a scale attached to the slide but I removed it and use a protractor if I need to set a specific angle.
@@myfordboy Thanks.
What kind of buildup on the disk? I have two, and one have the symptoms as you show here.
I belive it is impurities in the gas that block the jet.
Even if it was only £2.50 it's still worth fixing. I use a chef's torch for small jobs, but I guess that one is good for very detailed work. Cheers Nobby
Saving this one to my "Watch Later". I have one of them in the garage somewhere 👍👍
It would be cool if you could replace the puny gas cylinder with a hose attached to a larger cylinder for extended working time.
My friend has done this. Not difficult.
I always heard it was the quality (or lack thereof) of the butane you put in these that killed them. Thanks for sharing!
Yup. Learned that after buying the cheapest butane refill bottles I could get. They tend to gum up my lighters parts. The more expensive butane is filtered, resulting in less gummy impurities and a cleaner burn.
❤
I had one of these a few years ago and I never could get it to work properly. Wish I'd known this then 🤣 Cheers, Alan.
Great for soldering the copper pipes to boilers.
You can also spray IPA through the with a spraycan with a tube.
Very interesting. Nice work.
superb vid thanks, but I had great difficulty in seeing the tiny disk, that I'm sure I'll never be able to do this job
hey pls
Why not soak the head with the disc inside
Im guessing you didn’t watch the last 30 seconds of the video then? 🧐
@@Davidm1fcf i did
Mighty fine job. Had to fight these as well. Especially if you get a manky tin of gas but there’s seems better of late. I have an older one with a screw in jet will give this a go to see if I can get it cleaned. Thanks again 👍😁👍. Bob
Useful tip. Thanks for sharing
No pun intended.
Watching silver solder melt and wick into the gap is extremely satisfying to watch...

Hello, can you use river sand, does it have the same properties, thank you and regards?
You could try some. Add water to dry sand with a spray until it will hold it's shape when squezed in your hand but does not stick to it. It can take a bit of practice to get the moisture content correct.
@@myfordboy Hello, what type of sand is it?
I am using this www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=158 You need a clay bearing sand or add bentonite clay to silica sand.
This is an amazing series, I have one of these to resurrect. Would you mind sharing the burner dimensions?
The engine I copied did not have the origional burner but I was able to copy it from other videos. I can sketch it out if you email me.
@@myfordboy thank you so much :)
Goes to show the benefit of UA-cam for promoting interchange of ideas etc. Of course your channel is demonstrative of this!
Hello, what percentage of sand and sodium silicate?
20ml to 1kg of sand
Now, I think that makes more sense than making a lathe spider...
Very nice
Thanks for sharing 👍
Good functional ideas. The one concern I have, the chuck is installed with a right hand thread on a clockwise rotational axis. Thus it might come loose. An additional locking nut or something similar might help. Greetings Stefan.
Wow, I turned it off it was boring
Interesting idea. Food for 🤔 thought. Cheers Nobby
Hello, looks very useful. Any problems with it unscrewing?
No it's been ok. It can be tightened with the Tommy bar, same as the front chuck.
A fairly simple modification that extends the capabilities of the lathe, great stuff 👍👍👍
Nice video!
Great ideas, thank you
good idea

Great upgrade 👍No undervoltage protecton for the lipo pack ?
I am using a LiPo I already had so not worried about that.
So the planet doesn't have to make another one👍
Looking good. Is this design still going strong or have you recreated it and changed stuff since ? Just got a furnace and the tongs it came with are not the best for pouring - I don’t suppose you’d be looking at creating these for sale would you ? Saves we looking for alternatives ! 😊
Furnace is working well.Any damage to the refractory can be easily repaired with fire cement. The tongs are really good. I would only use the supplied ones for adding metal to the crucible. Very dangerous gripping crucible with tongs for pouring. No plans to market my tongs.
